Coralline handled it well because the other world has fantastical elements already. The cat knows in the real world coralline would find a talking cat too strange to truly listen to his warning.

In the book she keeps coralline in the mirror so long that she had eaten all four apples she had brought and falls asleep exhausted and scared.
